 Here is where you will find a general course calendar of due dates. Expect that we will discuss assigned texts in class. All papers and essays are due in class. All postings should be submitted before class on the day they are due unless otherwise specified.

Wednesday 7 November

  • Read Mencius (16-23)
  • Read “Supporting Ideas” (680-692)
  • Posting  POSTING CANCELLED.  SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION.
  • Rewrites of Essay 1 due.  Must be substantial revision.  I will not accept merely surface changes.  Do correct the style/grammar issues I may have noted on your essay, but this is not revision; it is editing.  Must be in the folder with all previous drafts and the grading sheet.

Friday 9 November

  • Read Hsun Tzu (24-33)
  • Read “Supporting Ideas” (692-98)
  • Short Paper 5 “Mencius & Hsun Tzu” due

Monday 12 November

  • No class today.

Wednesday 14 November

  • Group 1 presents on Gin Lane and Beer Lane.
  • Read Visual Texts: Gin Lane and Beer Lane
  • Read Prince Shotoku
  • Posting: Respond to either the visual texts or the 17-Article Constitution
  • Last day to contribute to “Suspend Your TA” which would result in another day of class being cancelled.  Funds go to support O-Negative, an interdisciplinary journal debuting here at MSU.  O-Negative seeks to encourage creative, boundary-crossing scholarship among undergraduate and graduate students at MSU.  For more information or to submit a paper, please email aegsofmsu@gmail.com.

Monday 26 November

  • Read Marx & Engels
  • Read Mo Tzu
  • First draft 2-3 pages; 2 copies; should use at least two class texts in this draft.
  • Group 4 presents

Wednesday 28 November

  • Read King
  • Read Gandhi
  • Posting due.  Respond to Freud, Madison, Marx & Engels, Mo Tzu, King or Gandhi.  Your choice.  Any thoughtful response is acceptable.
  • BRING THE LATEST COPY OF YOUR ESSAY TO CLASS
  • Group 5 presents

Friday 30 November

  • Read Benedict
  • Read Paz
  • Group 6 presents
  • Second draft 3-4 pages; 2 copies; should use at least three class texts in this draft.

Monday 3 December

  • Third draft due; I will collect.  You must be in class this day.
  • Posting: post the introduction and conclusion to your essay.

  • Final posting: comment on a classmate’s introduction and conclusion

Monday 10 December

  • Final draft of Essay 3 due  by 5 pm- no folder.
  • Final extra credit offering:  attend the film showing for Human Rights Day at the Bozeman Public Library at 7pm Monday 10 December and write a one page, single-spaced review of the film.  Reviews are due Thursday 13 December by noon.  The film is called Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action, and Gail Small who was featured in the film will be there for discussion afterwards.

Thursday 13 December NOON – NO EXCEPTIONS – NO EMAILED ASSIGNMENTS

  • Rewrites of Essay 2 due by noon; must include original grade sheet.
  • Film review extra credit due by noon.
